Prince – Purple Rain (live on Arsenio Hall in 1989)

There’s been a lot of talk recently about the video of Prince covering Radiohead’s “Creep” at Coachella. Someone uploaded it, after Thom Yorke expressed an opinion that it should be available, and Prince tweeted a link to it. Which is remarkable, because Prince is an active manager of his brand, and he gets most of the Prince videos deleted from YouTube as soon as they turn up.

While I was looking at the “Creep” video – which is awesome – I saw a link to this video of Prince playing “Purple Rain” live. Prince was on Arsenio Hall, and he played four songs. For “Purple Rain”, he was introduced by Arsenio and Patti Labelle, which you catch a snippet of at the beginning of the video. The fact that it’s from Arsenio is probably why it’s still on YouTube – Prince may not have that much control over clips like that. Who knows. What I do know is that Prince rips it in this clip, with all the tasty riffs and a nice face melting solo.
