Lou Reed – What’s Good (Live on Letterman in 1992)

In my ongoing hunt for the best musical guests from Late Night With David Letterman, I’ve found that all the clips that are available are digitized from video recorded at the time the show originally aired. So to get access to these clips, it requires someone being obsessed enough to record it on a VCR in the first place, with the foresight to hold on to the tape, and the wherewithal to digitize it and upload it to YouTube over a decade later.

Here’s an example. Lou Reed on Late Night in 1992. He’s with Mike Rathke, his writing partner and musical henchman for the Magic and Loss album. They play with Paul Schaffer and the Late Night band. “What’s Good” is one of the lead singles from Magic and Loss. Rob Wasserman is a big presence on that record, and you can hear his fretless bass sound replicated here.
