John Legend & The Roots – I Can’t Write Left Handed (Live on iheartradio)

John Legend and The Roots covered “I Can’t Write Left Handed” on their 2010 collaboration Wake Up!. It’s a fantastic album, mostly covers of  classic soul tunes from the 70s. “I Can’t Write Left Handed” is one of those songs. It’s written by Bill Withers, and it’s from his Live At Carnegie Hall double album. The original release came in a gorgeous gate-fold album, with pictures of the Withers and his band inside. A really amazing song about the lasting and damaging impact of war on a soldier. Powerful stuff. The song itself builds up until the brilliant Kirk Douglas – Guitar player for The Roots – kicks into a killer guitar solo, and the song just explodes from there before settling down towards the end. It’s beautiful.

This video from iheartradio has some short interview clips before and after the song.
