Steve Earle – Copperhead Road (Live on Letterman in 1988)

Steve Earle has always written big, bold songs. “Copperhead Road” is an early example, and tells the story of a Vietnam vet who returns from the war and starts growing weed. It’s a political song – an assault on Reagan’s War on Drugs. Earle plays mandolin, and brings a guitarist with him, too. The Late Night band provides the rest of the backing power. You get the Steve Earle interview after the performance as well. He’s got a great drawl.
