Grateful Dead – Birdsong (Live at Radio City in 1980)

I always thought this was a song about Joni Mitchell and her voice, but I just read that it’s actually about Janis Joplin. Which makes sense when you read Robert Hunter’s lyrics that way.

All I know is something like a bird within her sang / All I know she sang a little while and then flew on

Don’t cry now, don’t you cry, don’t you cry anymore / Sleep in the stars, don’t you cry, dry your eyes on the wind

This version is from the run they did at Radio City Music Hall in 1980. I like it quite a bit.
