ZZ Top – Cheap Sunglasses (Live on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1980)

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a music show on the BBC that ran from 1971 to 1988. Over the years, they had tons of great bands, some in the early stages of their careers. In this clip from 1980, we’ve got ZZ Top about 10 years into their career. They released Degüello the previous year, and “Cheap Sunglasses” was the big single. Billy Gibbons, songwriter and guitar monster, intros the song this way:

“Right now I want you to reach down to the bottom of your pocket, the bottom of your purse, and put on them cheap sunglasses. Some of you all out there know the words, so just shout them back at me through your television set. Get cheap with me one time!”

If you’re a Jane’s Addiction fan, you might recognize the coda riff from “Cheap Sunglasses” – they use it in “Pigs In Zen”.
