Steely Dan – Reelin’ In The Years (Live on The Midnight Special in 1973)

“Reelin’ In The Years” was a staple on WLAV when I was growing up. I loved it before I even knew who Steely Dan was. I remember buying Can’t Buy A Thrill at Sam Goody in the mall when I was a young teen. I bought it for the song “Do It Again”, and was blown away when I heard the beginning guitar riffs from “Reelin’ In The Years”. “That’s Steely Dan, too?”, I thought. It was in that moment that my lifelong obsession with the Dan began.

In this clip, Bill Cosby introduces the band, uses the phrase “turned on” in a way I’m not sure captures its full meaning, and then they move into a spirited performance of “Reelin’ In The Years”. You’ll probably notice that the background vocalist is waaay too high in the mix, and the poor guy clearly needs some good orthodontic work. Check out the dual guitar soloing, though – Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and Denny Dias. It’s seriously awesome.
