Joe Cocker – The Letter (From Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour)

I always think of this song when I’m getting ready to get on a plane.

Band of Gypsys – Who Knows (Live at the Fillmore East in 1970)

While my son and I were out running errands this morning, I was rocking Band of Gypsys in the car. A child needs to be taught who the greatest guitar player in the history of the instrument is. Jimi Hendrix. “Someday, there will be someone as good as Jimi Hendrix on the guitar, though, right Dad?”

Maybe, son. I don’t know. He’s the Shakespeare of guitar, and that’s a tough act to follow.

Parliament Funkadelic – Cosmic Slop (Live in Houston in 1976)

One of the greatest riffs in the history of rock and roll.

Jerry Garcia Band – Dear Prudence (Live in 1986)

While we are very excited to be seeing 3 nights of Dark Star Orchestra at the Dark Star Jubilee, we’re also pretty excited to see Melvin Seals & JGB there, too. They play Sunday in the late afternoon. Melvin Seals was Jerry’s partner in crime and keyboard player in The Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years. He carries the spirit of that partnership forward with his JGB band.

This is a special clip, from one of the first shows Jerry performed after coming out of a coma. It’s a nice rendition of “Dear Prudence”. Enjoy.

Grateful Dead – I Know You Rider (Live in Copenhagen in 1972)

It’s that time of day again. Time for another Grateful Dead post while were busy gearing up for the 2013 Dark Star Jubilee. This one is from the 1972 tour of Europe, documented in the legendary live album Europe ’72.

This “I Know You Rider” is from the April 17 show in Copenhagen at Tivoli Concert Hall. The video quality is outstanding; it was part of a TV broadcast. You get some great Jerry solo close ups, plus a good look at their tie dyed amplifiers. Don’t miss it!

Grateful Dead – Friend Of The Devil (Live at Winterland in 1978)

While we’re still gearing up for the Dark Star Jubilee, I’m going to be posting the Dead a bit more than usual. This is the second video in that vein. Here’s the first.

I’m a big fan of the lilting, reggae-ish style version of “Friend Of The Devil” from the mid to late 70s. This one is from The Closing Of Winterland video. Enjoy.
